Lesser tenrec (Echinops telfairi)

The lesser tenrec is a small exotic mammal from southern and southwest Madagascar. Many people mistake them for hedgehogs, they are however not related to hedgehogs at all. They are in fact a member of the family Afrotheria which includes elephants believe it or not! They are insectivorous and they will also occasionally eat small amounts of fruit. These tenrecs are really good climbers and should be provided with lots of branches. During the day they will sleep most of the time because they are nocturnal. And if you wake them they can be a little grumpy and sensitive to light. I will keep this super cool project updated, I’m hoping to breed these in the future!
